History & Origin

History

In my research I found some insightful information that has potential relations to the Goodall family and as such these are my perception on the research that I gathered corresponding to this. As well as some further facts around aspects affiliated with the Goodall name.

Icelandic Sagas - Grettir's Saga

Whilst looking into possible noise origins I came across links to the Icelandic Sagas. Specifically coming across a person named "Eirik Goddales" also alternative Nordic version "Eiríkur Goðdalir". Corresponding family members are also mentioned in regards to this and the area that they settled in Iceland. Originally Eirik started off in Norway but then moved on to discover new lands and eventually reaching Iceland where they settled.

Goddale is indication to a place where he moved to which was established in Iceland so also could allude to another potential place name. In modern times this location is Vopnafjörður in iceland. Plus the river that used to exist has dried up excellent map of the times indicates to this here.

Godel de Brixi

This is a person that often comes up as one of the oldest Goodall relations to settle in England. The person came in with Edward the confessor. A misconception that I have noticed occurring is the assumption this was a man when in fact this was a women. Initial records as indicated here give indication for this.

I tried to do further relations of this person but was unsuccessfull other than knowing that the person came across from Normandy. Since 'de brixi' is associated to the name in regards to this there is a place in Normandy which is potential on where she is from but obviously was high up to be offered land after conquest.

Ralph de Gaudel

When doing deep research in and around the battle of Hastings and trying to find more information on "Godel de Brixi" I came across Ralph de Gael. He was an earl in East Angles at the time around battle of hasting, possible connection to Goodall family is the fact that he was also known as "Ralph de Gaudel" which is the French equivalent of Goodall. Plus there was known "Gaudel" and "Godel" in brittany not long after this persons time. It is also known that altercation at the time with William the conquer lead to loss of land and him eventually going back to Brittany.

Thomas Goodall of Earle-Stoneham

The Goodall family crest which as can be seen to the right of this text is the earliest known form of the Goodall family crest. This was first anointed in March 1st 1612 to Thomas Goodall of Earle-Stoneham, he had quite a large family and notably Robert Goodall and his wife Katherine set sail to live in America further family members spread out across England.

A very good and informative site I found is wiggo, this goes into further detail around this plus indications for further origin relations as well which I have also touched on from my view. Big focus on this goes more indepth into the American side of the family and even has some images of Goodall ancestors on there.

HMS Goodall (K 479)

The HMS Good all was a British world war 2 captain class frigate, this ship was doing convoy escorted duties. On its duties in 1945 though a German u-boat attacked the convoy and sunk the ship. Further fact this originally was a evarts class destroyer escort for the US navy before it was brought into service under the Royal Navy after handing it over. Resting place for this ship is near the Kola inet entrance in the Barants sea. U-boat that sunk the ship was U-968

Origin

Some of my thoughts and aspects from my research on potential links to the origin of the Goodall family.

Norse Origin - Place name - Guddal

There are quite many references to a potential link to norse origin for the Goodall name, but alot of these references don't go into much detail. When I was looking into this further, I noticed there was a place 'Guddal' in the Guddalen valley in Norway. Factoring in that I have seen name variations plus the pronunciation of 'Guddal' this place has further potential fir being a place name which was common long ago.

An interesting read can be found here. This is about the discovery of Christians buried in a bog that was discovered at Guddal. Estimation on the burials was between the 11th to the 13th century.

Name based Occupation

Another common approach to naming in the olden times was by Occupation and I imagine like I did you will have seen documentation associating Goodale with the actual meaning of "Good ale". Some records i have found allud to this in the form that there occupation is they either produce/distribute ale for a living.

Further fact relating to occupation name "Goodale" is the Dutch equivalent that is "Goedaels", as this also translates into "Good ale" in Dutch. A derived name from this relating Dutch name is "Goethals" the link gives indication to this via the wiki page that has been created.

English Origin - Place name - Gowdall

Common place name associated with the Goodall name in England is Gowdall near snaith/Goole in Yorkshire. There are plenty of resources that can back this claim including many people who lived there with the place name of 'De Goldale' which eventually changed into the modern version of our name. As the original name for this place was 'Goldale' before it changed to 'Gowdall'.

Interesting fact that the old name translated into old English pre 7th century was, "Golde" a marigold plus "halh" a nook or recess. Also in medieval times this was part of the Osgoldcross wapentake. Wapentakes were part of Danelaw introduction when they occupied swathes of England.

Huguenots

On my searches there is references to the "Huguenots" which where a religious group in France. On the back of this though ties to France do go further back as proven French equivalent to the Goodall name can be Gaudel or perhaps Gaudelle.
